Rural e-commerce and global growth – entrepreneurship without borders

The classic narrative of ambitious entrepreneurs needing to move to a big city to succeed is no longer true. Data from Shopify shows that rural merchants are not only growing – they are growing faster than their urban competitors, and selling to the whole world from places you can barely find on the map.

The numbers that tell the story

Rural Shopify merchants generated $2.9 billion in cross-border sales in 2025. In 2019, it was $655 million. That is a growth of 342% in six years. The share of rural stores in the US grew from 25% (2015) to 30% (2025). In France, the share went from 11% to 19%, and in Canada from 14% to 20.5%. The growth started before and continued after the pandemic – this is a structural shift, not a temporary trend.

Adam Smith's principle in 2026

In 1776, Adam Smith formulated the principle that specialization requires adequate market size. Previously, this meant that niche experts could only survive in big cities – only there were there enough customers for highly specialized products.

The internet has made this irrelevant. A blacksmith in Lockhart, Texas, can sell custom BBQ pits to South Korea. A salt producer in Malden, West Virginia, can supply restaurants in Tokyo and Copenhagen. A skincare business in Nova Scotia can fill shelves in eight countries.

Europe leads the growth

European rural regions are experiencing explosive growth in cross-border sales:

  • Germany: 1,571% five-year growth

  • Spain: 1,844% growth

  • France: 1,114% growth

For Norwegian sellers, this is inspiring: the European network of trade opportunities is larger and more accessible than ever before.

Distance is no longer an obstacle

Rural and urban sellers now ship to virtually the same average distance: 1,799 km (rural) compared to 1,870 km (urban). The classic "gravity model" which predicted that businesses primarily sell to nearby customers has in practice been disproven.

The infrastructure that makes it possible

Modern commerce infrastructure – international payments, automated shipping with customs automation, AI-powered tools for product descriptions and translations – allows rural entrepreneurs to operate with the same professionalism as urban players, at lower costs.

Shopify is the infrastructure beneath all of this. For Norwegian sellers – whether you are in Oslo or in Western Norway – the opportunities are the same.
