Conversion optimization for Shopify online store – analysis graph

Increasing traffic to your online store is expensive. Increasing the conversion rate is free. Conversion rate optimization (CRO) is about making it easier for visitors to become customers – and for Norwegian online stores, it is one of the most cost-effective growth strategies available.

A conversion rate of 1% means that 99 out of 100 visitors leave the store without buying. Going from 1% to 2% doubles sales – without a single extra Krone spent on marketing.

1. Optimize the checkout experience

The checkout is where most people lose customers. Shopify's built-in checkout is already optimized, but make sure you have activated: guest checkout (do not force customers to create an account), Shop Pay for one-click purchases for returning customers, and installment payments via Klarna or Shop Pay Installments for high-priced products.

2. Product images that sell

Images are the most important conversion factor for products customers cannot touch. Ensure: a minimum of 3–5 images per product from different angles, lifestyle images showing the product in use, a zoom function, and a consistent background (white or neutral) across all products.

3. Social proof: Reviews and ratings

93% of Norwegian consumers read reviews before buying online. Install a review system (Judge.me, Yotpo, or Shopify's built-in Product Reviews) and enable automated emails requesting a review 7–14 days after delivery.

4. Clear shipping communication

Unexpected shipping costs are the most common reason Norwegian customers abandon their checkout. Display the expected delivery time and shipping cost early – preferably already on the product page. Consider free shipping over a certain order size to increase average order value at the same time.

5. Optimize for mobile

Over 65% of Norwegian e-commerce traffic comes from mobile. Test the entire purchasing process on a phone: are the buttons big enough? Is the text readable without zooming? Do the images load fast enough? Use Shopify's preview mode and Google PageSpeed Insights for mobile.

6. Product descriptions that answer objections

A good product description answers the questions the customer asks themselves: Is this right for me? Is it the right size? What is it made of? Think about the most common questions you get on email and live chat – answer them directly in the product description.

7. Urgency and availability

"Only 3 left in stock" is a powerful conversion tool – but only use it when it is true. Shopify automatically shows low stock alerts when you enable this. Limited-time offers with a visible countdown work well on campaign pages.

8. Live chat and chatbot

Shopify Inbox is free and integrates directly with the Admin and the AI sales assistant. Studies show that stores with live chat convert up to 40% better than those without. Even a simple chatbot that answers FAQ questions about delivery time and return policy can remove barriers to purchase.

9. Related products and product bundles

"Customers also bought" and "complete the look" sections increase average order value. Use Shopify's built-in product recommendations or apps like ReConvert and Bold Upsell for more advanced upselling and cross-selling.

10. Abandoned cart automation

70% of all shopping carts are abandoned. Shopify automatically sends an email to customers who leave checkout without completing – activate this under Marketing → Automations. Three emails (1 hour, 24 hours, 72 hours after abandoning the cart) are proven to recover 5–15% of lost orders.

11. Return policy that removes risk

A clear, generous return policy increases conversion because it reduces perceived risk. Display the return policy on the product page, in the checkout, and in the confirmation email. "30 days free returns" can increase conversion by 10–20%.

12. A/B testing: Measure what works

All the measures above are recommendations – but your store is unique. Use A/B testing via apps like Intelligems or ABConvert to test different variations of product images, prices, button texts, and CTA formulations. Let data – not gut feeling – determine what works for your customer segment.
