Shopify's Spring '26 Edition for developers is about one thing: making agentic commerce accessible to the entire developer ecosystem – and rebuilding the infrastructure these developers build upon.
Agentic commerce is open
Shopify has removed the approval requirement to build on its agentic commerce layer. Developers can now register agent profiles directly in the Developer Dashboard and gain access to the public MCP endpoint to build complete shopping experiences – from product discovery to paid orders – via UCP and Catalog API.
AI Toolkit is generally available
The AI Toolkit, which integrates with Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, and VS Code, is now generally available. It gives developers access to reference guides, live store data, and admin tools with autocomplete and error detection. The tool is designed to be "highly token-efficient" – meaning lower AI costs during development.
Static Apps: Serverless Shopify apps
One of the most requested features is here: Static Apps allow developers to build fully functional Shopify apps without server infrastructure. Shopify handles hosting, injects App Bridge and Polaris automatically, and handles authentication. Metaobjects and metafields are used to store merchant data.
Next Gen Events: Webhooks rebuilt
Shopify has rebuilt its webhook system from scratch. Next Gen Events enable field-level change filtering – developers can subscribe to specific data changes instead of all resource updates. Customizable GraphQL responses allow you to request only the data you need.
App Pricing: Consolidated billing
App Pricing replaces Managed Pricing and legacy Billing API. It automatically handles metering, invoicing, payment collection, refunds, and plan changes – with charges appearing directly on the merchant's Shopify invoice.
Flexible shipping: Generally available
"Ship and pick up in one order" – which allows buyers to choose different delivery methods for different items in the same checkout – is now generally available. Developers should test mixed shipping orders since most existing apps assumed one delivery method per order.
