Shopify is taking a big step into the future of commerce. The company has announced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard developed in collaboration with Google, which allows AI agents to complete purchases on behalf of customers directly in chat platforms.
This means that Shopify merchants will soon be able to sell directly in Google AI Mode, the Gemini app, and Microsoft Copilot—where people are already spending time and asking questions about products.
What is the Universal Commerce Protocol?
UCP is an open standard that allows AI agents to represent the entire checkout process in a conversation. Customers can enter discount codes, select subscription setups, confirm delivery times, and complete payment directly in the chat, without leaving the platform they are on.
The protocol works with all payment solutions, including Shopify Payments, and is already approved by over 20 retailers and platforms globally.
Open to all brands
Shopify is also opening its infrastructure to brands that do not use Shopify as their online store. Through the new Agentic plan, all brands can list their products in the Shopify catalog and reach customers via AI channels without building their own Shopify store.
Shopify merchants manage all integrations collectively from Shopify Admin through what they call Agentic Storefronts.
What does this mean for you?
For online stores on Shopify, this means that products can be discovered and purchased where customers are actually located, without them having to visit the store directly. This is a fundamental shift in how commerce occurs, and it is wise to understand this development now.
